MACHU meeting held in Southampton

(02-11-2008)

Two times a year all MACHU partners meet to discuss important MACHU matters with each other. This autumn the MACHU meeting was in Southampton from 20 until 22nd October. The Machu partners were guest at National Oceanography Centre. It was an important meeting in which the MACHU GIS was presented and delivered.

The MACHU GIS is working and the testing phase on the GIS viewer has ended. There is a workable GIS system for stakeholders in the Underwater archaeological field. Data from the MACHU test areas have served as test case, now the MACHU GIS can be filled with wrecks and sites also from outside the test areas.
Also relevant new layers will be added already in the GIS. For instance a layer with historic (digitalized) maps that can help determine were and why Under water Cultural Heritage is situated on the seabed somewhere.

Ultimately The GIS application with information on sites, laws, threats etc. will be the basis of a tool for the management of underwater sites. In this respect it can act as a Decision Support System for Underwater Cultural management. A code of good practise in managing UCH will be put on the MACHU website soon.

The next MACHU meeting will be held in march 2009 in Belgium. In May of 2009 a MACHU symposium will take place in the Netherlands.
